PLN 1,004 - this is how much you can save on the costs of employee illness per year by providing them with high quality comprehensive health care, according to the latest report "Work. Health. Economy. Outlook 2013-2017" prepared by Medicover Poland. This amount has risen by PLN 278 since the previous report. More than three fourths of this amount can be obtained by investing in the treatment of respiratory tract infections and back pain – these are the ailments that generate the highest overheads among economically active people.
This is the fifth edition of the report presenting the state of health of Polish workers. This year's analysis covered over 295,000 people aged 18-67, of whom 40% were between 30 and 39 years of age. The report shows the need to invest in the health of economically active people, whose health problems could contribute to reduced productivity and hence increased costs for employers,
comments Artur Białkowski, Vice President of the Board at Medicover Poland.
The results clearly show that employers could save nearly 28 percent more in this area, in comparison with the previous report on the 2012-2016 outlook,
Artur Białkowski adds.
The cost of treating respiratory tract infections per employee covered by effective medical care can be reduced by PLN 187. The savings are even bigger in the case of back pain. In Medicover Poland’s experience the cost of this illness per employee under our care can be up to four times lower than in the case of an average employee in Poland. Meanwhile, the reduction of funds allocated for the treatment of economically active people affects us all, because it is the state budget that is the source of financing their absences from work and the costs of treatment,
says Dr Katarzyna Gorzelak-Kostrzewska, Medicover Poland expert, Head of Prevention and Occupational Medicine, co-author of the report.
Lack of or inappropriate treatment of hypertension, from which nearly 4.5 million Poles aged over 50 suffer, may lead to other diseases of the cardiovascular system or strokes,
says Dr Katarzyna Gorzelak-Kostrzewska.
The coordinated care for employees suffering from back pain, which was implemented at Medicover three years ago, turned out to be an especially important factor in reducing the cost of treatment,
sums up Dr Katarzyna Gorzelak-Kostrzewska.
