The first ever cardiac surgery using the da Vinci robot in Poland took place this year on 26 November at Medicover Hospital. The mitral valve surgery, which lasted several hours, was performed by Prof. Randolph Chitwood Jr., MD, a renowned American cardiac surgeon who operated alongside doctors from Medicover Hospital. The advantage of this type of surgery is minimal invasiveness, fewer transfusions, faster recovery, and better clinical outcome resulting in no or minimal mitral valve leakage.
The ability to perform modern cardiac surgery allows us to deal with all kinds of difficult cardiac cases, which we treat as part of our contract with the National Health Fund (NFZ). Our NFZ patients can undergo treatment at our innovative, comprehensive cardiovascular centre offering advanced invasive cardiology treatments, that is at Medicover Hospital. We are a leading institution in the field of electrophysiology. It is also worth noting that we are the only ones in Poland who repair mitral valves without using cardiopulmonary bypass. This is thanks to the innovative NEOCHORD system. The Department of Cardiac Surgery conducts trainings for doctors from all over the world. Dr Krzysztof Wróbel, who introduced this method, has conducted presentations on it in many countries around the world. The da Vinci robot opens up a whole new chapter in cardio surgery, both at Medicover Hospital and throughout the country
- says Marcin Łukasiewicz, Director of Medicover Hospital.
This surgery is a breakthrough in Polish medicine and fits right into our strategy. The aim of Medicover Hospital is to strengthen our position as of one of the most innovative medical centres in the country. We are one of three centres in Poland that has the da Vinci robot, and we have its latest version. At Medicover Hospital, surgeries using the robot are performed by experts with many years of experience with the device. This is why we invited Prof. Chitwood, who shared his experience and knowledge with our team of cardiac surgeons at the hospital. Previously, the da Vinci robot was used at Medicover Hospital in urology. Dr Paweł Salwa uses the robot during operations and has performed over 900 prostate cancer surgeries using this method, previously in Gronoau, Germany, and now at our hospital
- adds Anna Nipanicz-Szałkowska, Director of Medicover Hospital.
This is a great day for Polish cardiac surgery and a very important day for Medicover Hospital
- said Prof. Randolph Chitwood in his speech.
